Dogs over Quail
By: Michael (Axle) L.
Veteran's day started out with the day off from work. I couldn't decide
whether to hunt for coyotes or quail,
so I went for both. On my way to the first stand, I jumped a covey of quail
that were still roosting, so I set up for my stand close by. The coyotes came
in fast. I just started my second series of calls when they came in. It
was a double; my first. I tried to take the one in the back first, but missed
firing two useless shots. Thankfully, I hit the second coyote with my third
shot. She spun around, and headed straight for me. I fumbled around trying to
get more shells into the gun, but she ran right passed me. As she headed for
cover in the wash, I lost her trail when she crossed the dirt road on the other
side. I found her later while chasing quail, two washes away, and put her
down. The most memorable part was being able to have my hunting buddy Amber
help with the skinning of the coyote. It was her first time, and she did a
great job! It took us a while to skin the coyote, because I hadn't done it in
over a year. I had questions about skinning around the head area and how to get
it ready for Fur Prep Day, so I called Gary Mc. for some tips and information.
Even though I had a problem deciding whether to hunt for quails or dogs,
choosing both had its advantages. I called and harvested my first dog, and also
was able to harvest some quail. Now I guess that saying "you can't hunt quail
without huntin' dogs" is really true.
